GRIZZLY BEAR FORGE COURSES

All Courses are held at Grizzly Bear Forge. Forging and Welding is an extremely high-risk practice so Safety is a high priority in the forge and in our workplace. We give each participant individual attention throughout the course. Questions are welcomed, and assistance is happily given but horseplay is not tolerated. Stock, lunch, refreshments, and safety equipment are provided, for use during the course only, or you can order your own PPE set for the day of the course.

 

Our goal is to inspire people to get mesmerized and fall in love with the mystical art and skill that is blacksmithing as well as welding, and not only that but an practical skill set to use and make an item forged or welded by your own hand to take home.

INTRODUCTION TO BLACKSMITHING

The Introduction to Blacksmithing course covers the main beginner fundamentals of Blacksmithing.

  •       Safety

    “Good Working Practices” when forging and in your work space as well as the PPE- Personal Protective Equipment needed when forging.

  •       Equipment and Tools

    What minimum tools and equipment you will need to start forging, instruction on how to safely use and care for your tools and equipment as well as what and where to look when sourcing stock and materials.

  •       Metallurgy

    Understand the fundamental make up and behaviour of the materials you will use to forge your projects.

  •       Smithing Methods and Skills

    Start building your blacksmithing arsenal with the basic methods and skills needed to forge like hammer control, heat control, working on a coal or gas forge, tapering, scrolls, twists, bends, drawing out and loads more.

  •       Project Planning

    Design and forge your first metal hand forged project to take home and show off. A selection of projects can be forged like a fire poker, steak turner, or meat fork to name a few.

BASIC BLACKSMITHING

The Basic Blacksmithing course covers the basic skills and techniques of Blacksmithing.

  •       Safety

    “Good Working Practices” when forging and in your work space as well as the PPE- Personal Protective Equipment needed when forging.

  •       Equipment and Tools

    What tools and equipment will be required to start forging more decorative pieces, instruction on how to safely use and care for your tools and equipment, what to look for when sourcing or making your own tools and equipment e.g. benders, bench vice, twisters, fullers, hammers, anvils, tongs, hardy tools, chisels and loads more.

  •       Metallurgy

    Understand the fundamental behaviour and forging methods of the materials you will use to forge your projects.

  •       Smithing Methods and Skills

    Enhance your Blacksmithing arsenal with learning and practicing basic methods and skills such as bending, rounding, riveting, tapering, scrolls, twists, bends, upsetting, hot and cold cutting and loads more.

  •       Project Planning

    Designing and forge your steel hand forged project to take home and show off. A selection of projects can be forged, like braai sets (fire pokers, steak turner or meat fork), decorative candle holder, bottle opener or a blacksmith knife to name a few.

INTERMEDIATE BLACKSMITHING

Once you have mastered the basics of blacksmithing you can progress onto more challenging projects. This course is more skill and method intensive and enhances on your existing blacksmithing arsenal and expertise level allowing you to forge your own tools for yourself.

    “Good Working Practices” when forging and in your work space including working with drills, sanders, grinders and welding as well as the PPE- Personal Protective Equipment needed when forging and fabricating.

  •       Equipment and Tools

    What tools and equipment is required to start forging and fabricating your own forge tools as well as instruction on how to safely use and care for your tools and equipment, what to look for when sourcing or making your own tools and equipment.

  •       Metallurgy

    Understand the methods to treat, stabilise and harden the materials you will use to forge your tools.

  •       Smithing Methods and Skills

    Increase your Blacksmithing arsenal with the methods and skills needed to make your own tools, like flatters, punches, swages, fullers, set hammers, cutting, grinding, shaping and loads more.

  •       Project Planning

    Designing and forge your tool of choice to take home and use at your forge. A selection of projects can be forged like a hammer, set of tongs, bender to name a few.

BASIC WELDING COURSE

The aim of this course is to give you the ability to learn how to weld creating new and fun projects, whether they be for forging, fabrication, artistic or for DIY purposes. This course is also geared to enable both young and old alike, to be able to further a skill that can aid you in not only the home forge but also just getting a bit more familiar with an unfamiliar trade. Throughout this course you will be learning either MAW (Metal Arc Welding) or MIG (Mixed Inert Gas) welding, and learning to do it comfortably. At the end of the course there will be an opportunity to put your newly learnt skills to the test by creating your own masterpiece for the day, which you can take home with your work pieces.

  •       Safety

    “Good Working Practices” when welding and in your work space as well as the PPE- Personal Protective Equipment needed when welding.

  •       Equipment and Tools

    Care and Maintenance of your welding equipment and tools required when welding. Equipment needs e.g. rods, helmet, chipping hammer and wire brush.

  •       Metallurgy

    Different types of welding joints and their uses, as well as where they will be most applicable.

  •       Welding Methods and Skills

    Weld joint preparation and execution. Material preparation. Difference between MAW and MIG Welding. The basics on how to start and end a good, sturdy weld. Machine Setup, rods, helmet, chipping hammer. Welding different thicknesses of material.

  •       Project Planning

    Project planning and execution. “If you fail to plan, plan to fail”.

    • FULL payment upon booking confirms your slot in the class. Any cancellations forfeit the full class fee.

    • In the unlikely event of a class being cancelled by Grizzly Bear Solutions (Pty) Ltd, all class fees are fully refundable or transferable to an alternate course booking. However, Grizzly Bear Solutions (Pty) Ltd cannot be held responsible for any other costs incurred.

    • Course Times are generally from 07:30 till 17:00 unless otherwise advised. If attendees have completed their tasks early you are free to depart or stay until the end of the course.

    • Please ensure that you arrive 15-20 minutes before the course starts, late arrivals interfere with the momentum and time available of the course and is not fair on the other course attendees who made the effort to be on time. Late arrivals will be asked to re-book for another course slot and the days course fee will be forfeited.

    • Safety – Personal Protection Equipment is provided for all attended courses in the form of safety glasses or welding helmet, apron, leather gloves and ear protection, for use during the course only. There are personal “PPE” packs available to purchase on request when booking.

    • Safety glasses must be worn at all times.

    • Please ensure that you have non-flammable clothing and sturdy leather shoes or boots. No shorts, loose clothing, sandals, “slops” or “Crocks” will be allowed!

    • Grizzly Bear Solutions (Pty) Ltd reserves the right to deny classes to anyone who is considered not physically capable of completing the given class. You must be in a reasonably good physical condition in order to successfully complete any of the courses. Blacksmithing and Welding requires a degree of exertion. Unfortunately, the dangers for those who have mobility issues will make these courses difficult or impossible to complete. When in doubt, contact Claude on 083 325 8001 to discuss.

    • Failure to realize that you are not physically capable on the day of the course, will not be grounds for a refund. However, you can participate for the value of gaining knowledge. The practice of the course skills will be for you to do in your own time.

    • Grizzly Bear Solutions (Pty) Ltd is currently only offering classes to students 12 years and older. Minors will need to be accompanied by a legal guardian for the duration of the course. An additional fee for refreshments will apply.

    • COVID 19 Protocols are and will strictly be adhered to at all times.

  • Disclaimer
